I agree with you; I'm so used to older Doctors like Pertwee and even Colin Baker that the young pups had to work twice as hard to convince me that old soul was still in there. (Davison struggled too, but he had the most deep-set eyes of any person I've ever seen, giving him the look of ancient eyes peeping out from a young man's face). 

This works better, and you captured the feel of his presence very convincingly.
